Right wing corporate fascism is why no ones going back to those jobs. They can afford to pay us. Their greed will destroy their businesses and we wont miss them. Theyd rather spend billions on robot sandwhich makers and zero casheir kiosks than pay us fair wages and give us healthcare we can afford on those wages. Its cheaper just to pay us. Its by design. The right hates human beings.
Cook drama, server drama, management drama, and the big one, customer drama
I’ve been a waiter for 20 years. I work in upscale fine dining. The treatment from ownership and management has always been subpar. Right now there’s an over saturation of restaurants, a public that has been used to the luxury of being waited on and served for next to nothing, and a stressful situation with the pandemic. The public will have to change their treatment restaurant workers and their expectations when dining out. Too many are treating the staff that does show up like they’re expendable, well there’s no one else who has the skill and desire to wait on you, so keep up screaming at hostesses, writing hateful yelp reviews about servers, and not tipping your bartenders and see what will happen to food culture in the country.
With unemployment still incredibly high, something doesn't add up. Millions are unemployed and being evicted onto the streets. Yet you claim they're going into better paying jobs? Really?
I don’t buy Barry’s explanation. These drunks & potheads didn’t hone their skill set during the pandemic lol
One of the problems in the restaurant industry, especially at small companies is abusive management and low pay. Outside high cost of living cities, restaurants that aren't paying at least $12 hr, no health benefits, that explains why there aren't applicants. There are many non-restaurants offering $15 hr with benefits that's why low paying restaurants can't find workers. Truth is there're only so many high school/post high school workers to go around.
People aren’t going back to restaurants not because of the pay it’s because they healed from the mental and physical abuse and found respect for themselves never to go back.
$100 min per hour or none
So people used the $$ given to them and found new opportunities. So are you saying they are not lazy?? shocked…
Sorry but teenagers do not have the social skills, patience, self control and endurance to stay at a restaurant long term during these times for low pay. Now your asking an adult to still do it?
Try wages its bottom of the barrel
I like working on my feet. I don't like customers bossing me around like I'm their child. People are such babies about food.
A large portion of workers within the restaurant world do not get respect. Referring to these workers as burger flippers is the reason why they will not be coming back to cook your lunch so you can sit on your butt licking clean your fat fingers. Anybody who talks down about another's occupation is worse than the size of their paychecks. Cook your own food you clowns. Button pushers click boys. Besides I shouldn't cook any food for men with titties.
Raise the minimum wage!
Ok…. If they make expensive tangible goods exclusive and hard to get, your regular consumers forget about them and don’t strive to obtain. The consumer then starts to think logically about life and decision making at a every day level…. Including what they do for work. It really doesn’t take that much money to live if you adjust consumerism. The apartment? Nah stay with family or get a smaller apartment with a roommate. The car? I couldn’t afford it when I wanted it now the price is 20% higher and my car works fine… the job? Management sucks and are nasty for no reason, the work environment terrible and we work long hours… plus they’ll screw you over a little on the check just cause…. I’ll find something else… people are just rejecting ridiculousness… that’s all
The pay is to low, that's why it's hard. If you think anything else you are kidding yourself.
Mr. Ritholtz -THANK YOU!!!
gosh.. I get SO annoyed at all of these "analysts" discussing their view from over -privileged lenses.. it's nice to see someone on here with a tiny bit of empathy
I waited tables and bartended through uni and grad school. It was good money, that industry was vital to me.
If the labor costs are not transitory, it is going to be interesting to see how much people are willing to pay for a hamburger ! Higher prices haven't stopped people from going to Starbucks.
Incomes haven't kept up with expenses since the 70s.
This guy is a breath of fresh air. Finally someone on TV having the capacity to be an independent thinker on a subject that nobody can agree on. Even if he is wrong, which we will find out when the stimulus ends, I like his thought process.
Why it's hard to get restaurant workers back to work? Because of minimum wage 7.25 ain't shit! You can't even get a damn one bedroom apartment making 7.25 an hour. Waiters and waitress make money from tips. STOP CALLING PEOPLE LAZY!

If I want to flip a "pink slime patty" then that's my business. If I want to aspire to be the overseeer of the person flipping a mystery meat burger, then I have to wear the right colored bow tie. Tell me, that surely cannot be right.
We seem to be living on planet jailhouse rock whereby I could get a double first from Harvard, yet still be tossing the night away when my boss has squeezed away all my opportunities?!
Guess that's the price for living in a system that has turned 'democracy' into 'chumocracy.' Utilitarianism folks.., it the future!
Barry is on point. People kept yapping that if you didn't like your minimum wage job, then get a better job. So, people did that and now ya all mad that you can't underpay them. WOW. Bloomberg finally catching on… About time.
Pay them more than $ 2 hr and tips
Why work for $2 went u can work a minimum wage of $7.15 without worrying if u will get tips on services
Because our President is a moron and keeps paying people not to work perhaps?
HE IS WRONG!!!! The stats show LAZINESS! upgrading their skill-set my ass…FREE MONEY is the reason!

people are leveling up? BWAHHAHAHAHAHAH!!! Ya they are leveling up on that new game they are playing on their phones at home while collecting unemployment.
This is when robots are going to fill the labour gap.
Ritholz asked a couple of restaurateurs and now he’s an expert on F&B employment.
Bloomberg must be desperate for talking heads.
